When to go to the Emergency Department
If you have a serious, life-threatening medical condition, you should go to a hospital emergency department instead of an after-hours service. You can also call triple zero (000) for an ambulance if needed.
- Helplines: Free services like HealthDirect, staffed by registered nurses and GPs, to provide advice and connect you to appropriate care.
- Telehealth services: Video or phone consultations with a GP, such as those offered by Night Doctor and 13SICK, allowing you to receive medical advice from your home.
- Home visiting doctors: Services like Night Doctor that send a doctor to your home for urgent care.
- Urgent Care Clinics: GP-led clinics that handle urgent but not life-threatening illnesses or injuries.
